#NewRelease Spotlight: THE ALPHA’S TABOO MATE, by Ravenna Tate

Writing shifters was something I was asked to do by so many readers, I felt I had to try it. Did I hit a home run? Only time will tell.

THE ALPHA’S TABOO MATE is book one in my new Blood Moon Lynx series. Here is the link to the series page on my website:

http://ravennatate.blogspot.com/p/blood-moon-lynx.html

Here’s the series blurb:

One thousand years ago, in an unholy alliance, a male lynx shape shifter and a female vampire became lovers. Both knew their mating was forbidden, but their desire for each other was too great to ignore. Under a blood moon, they mated. The lynx bit the vampire woman, marking her as his mate. The vampire in turn bit the male lynx shifter, marking him as hers forever.

But then the lynx took a human female as a lover, betraying the vampire and pack law. When the vampire discovered his infidelity, she struck out against the two, but in the end couldn’t kill her lover. The human female and the lynx turned on the vampire. While she slept in her coffin during the day, they drove a stake through her heart. Unbeknownst to them, in doing so they turned the vampire’s mark of possession on the lynx into a powerful curse that affected his descendants for all eternity.

Despite centuries of mating with other female cat shifters, the male lynx shifters still have vampire blood in their DNA. Because of this, they possess powers that include being able to see minute details at great distances, and being able to travel with tremendous speed while in partial or full shifted form. Their powers are strongest during a blood moon. When they mate with a human, however, the offspring possess enhanced negative traits such as greed and contempt for the pack and its laws.

As the legend of the unholy alliance grew into a myth, fewer cats believed in it, thus exposing all the packs to dangers that still lurk today…

Here’s the blurb for THE ALPHA’S TABOO MATE

Alpha lynx shifter Canyon Benedict has always known Fiera Kent was his mate. When leopard shifter Hawke Medina tries to claim her, in order to use her as leverage to gain control of the Kent fortune, Canyon takes matters into his own hands. But even after he and Fiera are officially mated, the threat from the Medina family is far from over.

Fiera has loved Canyon from the time she was a child, and is thrilled when he sneaks her away to his family’s secret cabin across the river so they can be mated. But Hawke won’t let it go. Canyon and his father eventually discover illegal business practices that uncover the Medina family’s web of deceit and lies affecting their entire village.

But is it enough? Will Canyon have to fight Hawke to determine which alpha can finally claim Fiera for life?

And here’s a sexy excerpt!!

A powerful orgasm overtook her. In response, Fiera arched her back and cried out. Surely his dick inside her couldn’t feel better than this. If it did, she’d pass out from sheer joy. He continued sucking her clit and finger fucking her until the contractions began to subside. Once they did, he lay on top of her again and kissed her.

Fiera wrapped her arms and legs around his hot, hard body and shoved her tongue into his mouth. She tasted her own juices, but she didn’t care. This was so damn wonderful she might never leave this cabin. They could stay here, making love until they couldn’t walk, and she’d be just fine with that.

“Oh, Fiera…” Canyon sat back on his heels and stroked his dick again, then moved closer to her and guided it toward the opening to her wetness. “Are you ready?” His voice was so rough and gravelly, but that only added to the excitement.

“Yes!” She’d been ready for this most of her life. “Take me, Canyon. Make me yours.”

With a loud groan, he began to ease his cock into her pussy. Fiera held her breath and bit her lip because it hurt. “It’s all right, sweetheart. Try to relax your muscles.”

“Okay.” She smiled up at him, touched that he’d noticed her discomfort.

Canyon bent down and kissed her again, gently working his lips over hers until Fiera was so focused on the kiss and the heady sensation it sent coursing through her body, she didn’t realize his cock was finally inside her. There was no pain now, only a fullness that sent shockwaves of desire out to her fingers and toes.

“Oh, yes. That’s it.” When Canyon began to move, Fiera threw back her head and moaned loudly as the most exquisite pleasure flooded her senses. “You’re mine now, Fiera. No one can take you from me. We’re bonded forever!”

#NewRelease Spotlight: FIGHTING TO WIN, by Nicole Flockton

Title: Fighting to Win

Series: The Elite: Book One

Author: Nicole Flockton

Genre: Adult, Sports Romance

Published: August 10, 2016

Julia Ashland walked away from Mitch Osborn when a scandal rocked her world following the diving world championships. Now she’s face to face with him again at the biggest event of the year – the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Not only must she fight her attraction to him, she has to fight to prove she earned her position on the diving team.

Mitch Osborn is the darling of the swimming world. Competing at his third Olympics his focus is on increasing his personal gold medal tally not rekindling a relationship with Julia—the woman who publicly humiliated him with another member of the swim team.

Now thrown back together at the Olympics, will their competitive natures take hold or will they be fighting to win each other’s hearts once more.

Fighting to Win Excerpt © Nicole FLockton 2016

“Now.”

One word, and like the elite athlete she was, Julia Ashland obeyed her coach’s command.

Breathing deeply, she kept her eyes focused on the timing clock affixed to the wall at the other end of the swimming arena. She wiggled her toes, the diving platform rough against the bottom of her feet, before arching her back, arms stretched wide as she fell into the abyss below.

Legs straight.

Toes pointed.

She smoothly brought her arms directly above her head and hit the water with the precision of a bullet piercing a target. The shock of the cool pool water washed over her as she sank from the momentum of her dive.

A couple of strong kicks turned her from hitting the bottom to heading back to the surface.

Adrenaline pumped through her veins as she stroked to the side of the pool. Hefting herself out, she walked over to the table that held her chamois.

Now came the nerve-wracking bit—her coach’s critique.

Mick had been with her for so many years that she shouldn’t get worried about his comments. Unfortunately, she did. Even though the dive she’d executed was a warm up. A basic swan dive. A dive she’d done a million times. She felt like she’d nailed it. Mick would find something to comment on, no doubt about it.

Arch your back more.

Your fingers weren’t touching.

Your big toe was out of alignment.

Little things, but every one so important in the grand scheme of things. Those tiny imperfections could mean the difference between getting an 8.5 score and getting a 6.5.

The difference between a gold medal and silver medal in the Rio Olympics. Probably the last Olympics she’d attend; at twenty-four, she was considered in her prime.

Last year, riding high after a gold medal performance at the World Championships in Russia, she’d been a favorite to win gold at Rio. Now, after the scandal, her chances of winning any medal was slim.

Bestselling author Nicole Flockton writes sexy contemporary romances, seducing you one kiss at a time as you turn the pages. Nicole likes nothing better than taking characters and creating unique situations where they fight to find their true love.

On her first school report her teacher noted “Nicole likes to tell her own stories”. It wasn’t until after the birth of her first child and after having fun on a romance community forum that she finally decided to take the plunge and write a book.

Apart from writing Nicole is busy looking after her very own hero – her wonderfully supportive husband, and two fabulous kids. She also enjoys watching sports and, of course, reading.

Kate

Well, first of all because I was lucky enough to be invited to participate in an anthology about one of my favorite cities. New Orleans has a magic like no place else and I come back from visits there full of inspiration. Every part of the city has so many stories of its own. I hope I did justice to the feel of the Big Easy.

Second, I was glad to have the opportunity to continue the story of Warren and the crew of Evening at Animals. The shifter world in which they live has its own magic that I feel blends with New Orleans, even if the original club is far away in Arizona. The Superstitions are every bit as mystical in their own way. And with all the strife in the world right now, a story about two people from different “races” and backgrounds made me happy. ~ Kate

Tina1

Paranormal beings fascinate me. To have even a tenth of their superpowers—wow. Tell me you wouldn’t like to use a gift for precognition to find out which stocks to buy or whether you’ll get that raise. That said, special gifts do come with drawbacks (doesn’t everything?). A vamp may live forever, if you call that living, but for some, sunlight’s a killer. Weres frequently have bad hair days. A hot reaper like Zekiel and badass demon like Jewel have their own problems. For her, it’s meeting her ‘soul quota’ for Satan. For him, it’s making sure she doesn’t sign everyone up for Hell before he can reap them. As competitors and lovers, they’ve met their match. ~ Tina

Erzabet

Why I wrote the book: I have always been fascinated by New Orleans and the loupe garou legends in the surrounding swamps. The character of Marie Laveau is also one of interest. What if I could combine the two for a spicy tale of love, redemption and voodoo? Thus sprang the impetus for the Root Workers series and the bare bones of Bayou Shadows. There will be many more books to come and I plan to lengthen this first novella a good deal. I also wanted to showcase what it may have been like to be a gay man in those times, consciously on alert from being discovered. Add in the power of a necromancer in Marie Laveau’s city and you have a powder keg just waiting to explode.

Delia’s character is also one I loved. She wants to know her past, but it is kept hidden from her-for a purpose. There is power in secrets, especially hers. I wanted to explore the loa principle in voodoo and give her a parent who will ultimately help determine if she can navigate the dark side to help save the man she loves. I hope you enjoy the read and remember…there is magic in the moonlight… ~ Erzabet

TeresaBlueMan

The Lion of Frenchman Street started out simply enough: my husband and I spent our last vacation in New Orleans, much of it listening to jazz on Frenchman Street. At one club, I spotted an adorable tattooed female bartender who danced along to the music as she mixed cocktails. I thought she’d make a great character someday. And I knew her hero would be a jazz musician. Being the kind of writer I am, I was pretty sure they’d both be kinky. When I got a chance to write for this collection, I remembered that bar and that bartender and imagined a talented, hardworking sax player, who, like many of the men I’d seen in New Orleans, dressed sharp even in bone-meltingly hot weather. I had no idea who this handsome man really was, though, until I dreamed of a lion. The lion was magnificent, a perfect specimen, until I got closer. Then I could see it had a hole in its ribcage and its heart was bleeding. I woke up knowing that under my hero’s gorgeous, Domly surface, he was a hot mess with a broken heart–and a ginger with crazy hair. From there, I could write the tale. ~ Teresa

MeExcerpt

Creole Corsair was not my first attempt at a novella for this anthology, it was actually my third. The first two attempts kept spinning out of control, and I couldn’t rein in the characters or storyline to fit the parameters set for the story lengths. I’m a complete pantser, so until I start writing I have no idea where my stories will go. So to do right by the anthology, and the two previous stories I started, I had to set them aside for other projects because they need their own full length books. I finally settled on Sabine and Jasper and came up with a plot I could work into a novella. People say write what you know. What do I know? Unrequited high school love, being the chubby kid, and pirates. LOL So I built a story weaving in those three things, tapping into a ‘what if’ scenario that all girls who suffered the unrequited feelings of our first love think about…what if he actually did love us too? I hope everyone enjoys my version of that fantasy. ~Wren

LeteishaGirl

I wrote Phenomenal to be a transitional piece in my Lost Series, a collection of standalone novels around a central lost theme. I loved the song Phenomenal by Eminem and Mixed Martial Arts. I thought “what would happen if you had the spirit of a champion but life got in the way? How bad would you fall down?” In Phenomenal, My hero has fallen to the ground. He’s beaten, torn into pieces, and gasping for breath. And yet he still gets in the ring. But he’s forgotten something…how to fight for himself. That is until he finds a woman who’s had the fight beaten out of her too. And yet she doesn’t give up. She finds a way to leave her abusive husband, and forces the hero to take a long look at his situation. Someone else’s situation can always be worse than your own. If they can get up, you better. And then I took her away from him. Yeah, my hero hated me, and it made him fight harder. That battle between us, he to get his girl back, me to keep her away until he was worthy, created Phenomenal. ~LeTeisha

NewTeaseMB

I joked with the other ladies in the anthology that I wrote this book simply because I like sexy dragons. Because, who doesn’t, right? Originally, I wrote a short piece about a group of dragon shifters for a different anthology call, but I loved it so much I decided I’d rather turn it into a series. Playing With Fire is a prequel of sorts to that first piece and will be followed by the rest of the series about the men of Komodo Security and Private Investigations–all dragon shifters. I like the idea of exploring dragons from multiple cultures and histories, and taking some of the different elements of dragon lore and turning them around for a different take. So…keep a watch out for the next book in the Komodo Securities series! ~Margaret

Our wonderful friend and fellow NOLA Naughty Nin9 author, Amanda Byrnes, passed away in July. We dedicate this anthology to her memory. The loss has touched us deeply. But none more so than by her friend and critique partner, fellow NOLA Naughty Nin9 author Liv Rancourt, who on behalf of Amanda will share some things about why Amanda wrote her story…

This is a story about friendship. It’s a story about hundreds of shared emails and more than a few glasses of wine. It’s a story about laughter, and understanding, and respect.

And that’s just me n’ Amanda.

The story of Sultry contains many of the same elements. Last January, one of the original Naughty Nine authors had to bow out, so I emailed my friend and critique partner Amanda K. Byrne, and asked her if she’d be interested in filling the slot. She agreed, and after we worked out the details, I was treated to a stream of emails. “What about this? Do you think it would work?” She had lots of great ideas – I’ve never known another writer who could top her for spinning plot bunnies – but nothing clicked.

Then in the end of January, she sent me the first scene of a story. Ash, the hero, is a virgin. Rory, the heroine and his very best friend, is not. She’s the only woman he’s ever felt comfortable with, and, to use Amanda’s own words, “…the point … is to gender-flip the whole ‘virgin heroine asks the player hero to take her virginity'” thing. Ash and Rory were friends first, and the steps that led them to becoming lovers makes a fabulously sweet and hot story.

Sultry came together fast – Amanda could crank out the words (good words, too!), and my beta-reading comments were mostly along the lines of “OMG YOU WROTE A 25 PAGE SEX SCENE AND IT WORKS AND I HATE YOU”.

Nah, not really. 🙂

I didn’t hate her at all. I admired her, and respected her, and damn but I miss her. Amanda unexpectedly passed away on July 5th, leaving behind friends and family and her long-time S.O. I hope you enjoy Sultry, and that you seek out Amanda’s other work. She had so much talent and so much heart, and we’ll all feel her loss for a very long time. ~Liv

LivBlond

The germ of the idea for Change of Heart came from a scholarly article I read about Dr. James Barry, a 19th century British military surgeon. He was incredibly gifted, accomplished, and known for being rude, and after he died, the serving-woman who prepared his body discovered he was a woman.

His story has been claimed by feminists, and more recently by students of trans history. It’s impossible to know how Dr. Barry viewed himself – as a highly intelligent woman who did what was necessary to practice medicine at a time when women were forbidden to do so, or as a man who happened to have a different biology.

Either way, Dr. Barry fascinates me. There are very few records of trans people from before the 1970s, and I wanted to explore how it might have been to live with that kind of secret. We’d agreed to set all our stories in New Orleans, and since few US cities have a more colorful history, I basically just picked a year and went with it. I hope I captured something of the time and place, and I hope you enjoy my sweet and spicy little story. ~ Liv

LeTeisha Newton: So I think this is the part where I’m supposed to say something super cool, win you over, and make you my life-long superfan…OR wait, is that how I am about my anime collection?

Probably.

Basically, I’m an author, blogger, geek, and villain lover (Joker IS MINE!). There shouldn’t be any surprise then that I tend to love my heroes a bit broken, all messed up, and in need of someone who understands them just the way they are.

Ha, my heroines are right there with them. You see, love is nice, it’s sweet. It can be all rainbows and glowing stars. And then it can be dark, twisted, hurtful, and feel so good you have to scream about it. So I write like that. From one side of the spectrum to the other, because that’s real. That’s life. And that’s what we crave–-delving into a fantasy world or not.

Sadly, Amanda passed away July 2016. When she wasn’t plotting ways to sneak her latest shoe purchase past her partner, Amanda wrote sexy, snarky romance and urban fantasy. She liked her heroines smart and unafraid to make mistakes, and her heroes strong enough to take them on.

When she wasn’t writing, she was reading, drinking hot chocolate, and trying not to destroy her house with her newest DIY project. She lived in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, and no, it really doesn’t rain that much.

Tower Sniper: The Terror of America’s First Active Shooter On Campus was released on July 26th 2016 and focused on the Charles Whitman and his rampage on the UT campus August 1st, 1966.The heartbreaking events of that day still ripple through the history of the University of Texas and in the memory of the victims of Charles Whitman. That was the day the engineering student at the University in Austin rode the elevator to the top of the 30 story university tower armed with seven firearms and a foot locker filled with ammunition, food and supplies. His ‘reverse siege’ of the campus and surrounding area lasted 96 minutes, during which he shot 46 people – 14 fatally. When the murders of his wife and mother, plus the death of a victim in 2001 from wounds sustained that day are included, the total horror was 17 killed and 31 wounded. It was the first of what has become a sorry and sorrowful chain of similar events – campus mass shootings – in the United States.

Book Description:

On August 1, 1966, University of Texas engineering student Charles Whitman went to the top of the 307-foot campus tower. Over the next 96 minutes he shot and killed 15 people and wounded 31. Tower Sniper: The Terror of America’s First Campus Active Shooter, by Monte Akers, Nathan Akers, and Dr. Roger Friedman, explores the history and personal experience of this seminal tragedy, enriches public memory, and advances our understanding of mass shootings that continue to haunt America.

The authors vigilantly examine the details leading up to the event, the shootings, and their half-century legacy in stark detail. In doing so the authors correct various myths that have been part of the public narrative for decades, such as a brain tumor having motivated Whitman’s actions, that he intentionally targeted certain victims, and that he attempted to make it appear that multiple snipers were active. Witness interviews, examination of primary sources, and handwriting analysis reveal information overlooked until now, including the factors that actually contributed to Whitman’s predatory behavior and how his death and autopsy were mishandled.

Employing the expertise of a clinical psychologist who was best friend to one of the shooter’s young victims, the book contrasts current understandings of trauma with the approach taken at the time, documents the long-term traumatic legacy of mass shootings, and describes how individuals and communities can successfully cope with traumatic memories. The release of this book coincides with the unveiling of the newly expanded memorial for the victims of this tragedy on the University of Texas campus, August 1, 2016, the 50th Anniversary of the shooting.

Sabine Chauvet needs closure on her family’s past. The sextant that belonged to the legendary pirate Jean Lafitte is supposedly the only link to her family’s legacy, and Sabine is determined to get her hands on it. But when she runs into Jasper Carrington, her old high school crush, the one thing in her past she wasn’t searching for finds her instead.

Jasper Carrington has it all, money, notoriety, and the dream of building an alternative medicine wing of the children’s hospital. When the woman who haunted his high school existence shows up at his auction, he decides to take the chance to right the wrongs of his past.

Giving in to one kiss turns their old fantasies into reality, one neither of them were prepared for. But the same issues of their past still threaten their new future, and they must learn to finally be themselves in order to be together.

Sabine caught herself in the throes of flirting and shook herself from her thoughts. She needed to get away fast. The longer she stayed in his presence the chances improved of him figuring out who she was.

“Well, do me the pleasure of sharing your name, so I can be sure to tell my next of kin who I have fallen prey to. I feel, however the end may come for me, it shall be with a smile on my face if in your company.” His attention dropped from her eyes and bee-lined to her chest.

The flutter in her heart nearly jolted her forward as she swallowed back a gasp. Surely he couldn’t be talking about her. Jasper Carrington saying such things about her seemed surreal. Straight out of one of her high school fantasies about him. Of course it was more than likely just a part of the show he put on for the night, luring guests aboard and primping them for their donations with flirtatious ego padding.

A nervous chuckle squeaked from her throat. Thinking on the fly, Sabine had to come up with a clever cover. “I’m the Creole Corsair. And you, Captain Carrington, should be more careful about who you keep company with.” She flicked her wrist and handed him back the money clip she lifted from his back pocket. Proving once again, charm and a set of tits worked more magic than Houdini.

His sexy lips evened out into a slick grin. “Keep that up and I’ll have to tie you up below deck.”

“Promises. Promises.” Sabine spun on her heel and gave him a quick wave as she sauntered across the ship. If she stayed and talked to him any longer she’d never make it around the ship in time to scope out the location of the sextant before the auctioneers got to it. From her studies of the Carrington parties in the past, the items up for bid were all stored below deck with a standing guard on duty until the auctioneers retrieved them and brought them to the top deck for the auction. It was her only chance.

The scent of his crisp cologne still lingered in the air, sending a flutter to her stomach. He smelled of new money, dreams, and sex. She hadn’t planned on having such a distraction tonight. If it weren’t for Carrington, she’d have already taken the sextant and been on her way home. The bastard. Twelve years after high school and he still got to her. At least his never knowing she even existed played in her favor now, as she held on to her anonymity.
