Rose Red will stop at nothing to protect her sister, Snow White, from suffering the same fate as their mother. She vows to kill Hestor, the evil dwarf sorcerer responsible for her death. But a twist of fate lands her on the bottom of a riverbed, and her life in the hands of a mysterious stranger.

Marcus is a beast of a man. He is a bear by day, man by night thanks to a curse from the evil Hestor. But when he meets Rose, he unleashes the real animal. Falling for her is dangerous enough as he must protect the secret of his curse, but she may just be the key to getting his kingdom back.

Writing with pen and paper she brings things to life, and hell hath no fury like an antagonist scorned. Now she’s on the run from Kyrin, an evil demon warlord who surfaced from one of her first manuscripts. And the only way to get rid of him is to destroy the manuscript.

Enter JG1988, her long-time online friend. He knows nothing of the curse nor the magick Emma possesses. His only wish is to finally meet her in person and take their relationship to the next level. He reveals a surprise of his own when he shows up at Emma’s door as international recording artist Jake Griffin.

Destroying the manuscript will not only get rid of Kyrin, but also end her relationship with Jake. But keeping secrets from him may end up doing just that. In order to survive they’ll resort to love, lies, and a little Gypsy magick.

#NewRelease Spotlight: SLOW BURN, by Michelle Roth @mroth_author

Hi there, everyone! I’m Michelle Roth and I’m here to introduce my latest release, Slow Burn. This is the second in my Romance on the Go series, Diamond and Diamond Private Investigators. In this sexy installment you’ll get to know Rick Diamond. He’s the driving force behind Diamond and Diamond.

Rick is painstakingly dedicated to his job. When the CEO of Cynertex contacts him about a case of corporate espionage, he goes undercover in a science lab to find out who’s selling company secrets. All hell breaks loose when he realizes that he’s falling for his main suspect!

While working undercover in the Cynertex development department, Private Investigator Rick Diamond finds himself taking a very personal interest in one of the lab technicians, Tessa. He’s completely shocked, though, when he discovers that he’s falling for his prime suspect.

Tessa Fitzsimmons finds herself immediately drawn to Rick Dante, the new intern at work. She’s captivated by his charm and his nearly heart stopping grin. All it takes is one incredibly passionate night together and already she’s beginning to see a future for them.

Rick knows he’s taking a huge risk by dating a suspect but he can’t seem to help himself. If she’s guilty, it will absolutely tear him apart. And, if she’s innocent? She might not be able to forgive him when she finds out who he really is.

Tessa laughed as she pulled him toward the Twirling Teacups.

Rick groaned and asked, “You know they’re gonna take away my man card, right? I just have to give it to the guy taking the tickets.”

C’mon,” she said, nudging him. “We can’t come to Centreville and not ride the teacups!”

She tried not to laugh as he made a big production out of it. He counted the tickets, then looked at the ride. Then he looked back at her and asked, “I can drive, right?”

Deadpan, she said, “I thought I would drive.”

He raised his eyebrow but said nothing. The slight smirk on his face spoke volumes though. It clearly said, “There is no way I’m letting a chick drive me around in a teacup.”

Fine. You can drive.”

Rick grinned and handed the tickets to the ticket collector, who clearly overheard her complaint if the smirk on his face was any indication. He just pointed and said, “You folks can have the pink one on the right.”

Tessa laughed and said, “Oh good. My favorite color.”

Rick said nothing, though his look promised retribution. He merely slid into the tea cup and patted the bench next to him.

When she was seated next to him, her thigh brushed against his.

His tone conversational, he said, “So, this is the most emasculating first date I’ve ever had. This is a record.”

So, I guess that means no carousel?” Tessa teased, as the music started up and the ride began to slowly move.

In answer, he grinned and then spun the wheel so she swayed into his chest. She started to right herself, but Rick put a halt to that when he wrapped an arm around her. Most of her upper body was now pressed against his chest.

The look on Rick’s face was a mixture of both amusement and desire. As they continued to spin, neither of them manning the wheel, his smile faded. With a look of concentration, he slowly closed the distance between their mouths.

Tessa stretched up, pressing her lips against his. At the first brush of her lips against his, she felt a jolt of awareness run through her. When his hand came up to cradle her cheek, she let out a soft sigh of pleasure. He took the opportunity to deepen the kiss, his tongue exploring her mouth, twining with hers.

She couldn’t stop the soft moan that rose from the back of her throat as his hands cruised lazily along her hips and back. Even through the layers of her sundress and the thin cotton sweater she wore, she could feel the heat of his hands on her body.

His hands moved to tangle in her hair as he gentled the kiss. But instead of backing away as she expected, Rick began to nibble at her jaw and then trace a path down the side of her throat with his tongue.

Tessa could do nothing but tilt her neck and enjoy the sensations as he swirled and nipped at her. Her arousal grew with every hot, open mouthed kiss he placed against her sensitive neck. It was clear he knew exactly what he was doing.

#NewRelease Spotlight: VANQUISHED, by Allyson Young

In the future, Earth negotiated a treaty with the Shadalla, only to wage another war with the Juxtant. Together, humans and Shadalla defeat that mortal enemy, but corruption and greed always prevails.

Vayne Palldyn, Sovereign of the planet Nibiru, is determined that his species not become extinct, and will take revenge on those who unleashed that genetic bio weapon. His kind has kidnapped human women before, and despite the Treaty none returned to Earth—the Shadalla have a biological advantage in seducing Chosen mates.

Honorably discharged warrior Neira Grekhov boards the starship Astris, seeking peace but succumbing to soul sickness. Until the Astris is boarded by pirates.

Spying Neira ferociously defending her fellow passengers, Vayne pursues her, as his Chosen. Neira resists, and despite healing her emotionally the Sovereign wonders if he must concede defeat at the hands of this infuriating woman.

Then the stars align and truths are discovered…

Daggers at the ready, the three pirates once again approached the doors. Vayne spied a young, fair-haired male standing wide-eyed, his mouth dropping open as Barek, Duff and their Captain charged from the lift. Vayne followed on their heels, wincing as they mowed the young man down with a hit to the head. Then all chaos descended.

A significantly smaller figure, dressed completely in black, waded into the triangle of pirates. It laid Barek low with well-placed blows to his knees and an uppercut to his jaw as he fell to the ground. The baton inflicting the punishment flashed in a blur of movement to match the warrior’s whirling grace. Vayne was already moving to assist when the fighting dervish dealt with Duff, body moving with grace and deadly intent, bringing the pirate down with punishment to his kidneys. Short black hair gleamed in the harsh lighting as the warrior spun to take on Captain Ristos.

Vayne used his shocker, nearly catching one slender, black clad shoulder as their opponent made contact with Ristos’ ribcage, the baton making a dull, wet sound. But the little warrior whirled out of range, turning to renew the attack, and the bolt spent itself harmlessly against the bulkhead. Vayne’s cock filled and stood at full attention, causing him considerable discomfort in his tight-fitting space uniform. By the shades of Turco, it was a female. He locked eyes with orbs a brilliant shade of the golden gemstones so prized on his planet before she charged, moving gracefully on the balls of her bare feet.

He dies!” Duff’s howl cut through the tension as Vayne prepared to defend himself, and the female halted, stumbling as she did so. Duff held his weapon at the young male’s throat, vicious intent written across his features.

No, don’t,” the lithe beauty called out, and Vayne watched, transfixed, as she dropped to her knees, carefully laying down the lethal weapon she used so efficiently. She then clasped her hands behind her neck.

Nothing in her posture spoke of true submission, but it didn’t matter to Vayne’s cock. That appendage throbbed painfully and he was at a loss as to how to calm it. Never had he ever… Vayne struggled to make his body move. Ristos moved first.

Kicking aside the baton, he gestured to Duff, who released his hold on the still-unconscious young male. Was this woman attached to the man? Vayne shook his head. It didn’t matter. She was now his.

Secure her.”

Ristos bent and clipped a pair of solar cuffs around the woman’s wrists, and Vayne approved of how efficient the captain was, yet afforded the little female respect. He wasn’t the only male to appreciate her attempt to defend this deck. The restraints emitted slight whirring sounds as they engaged. Charged by any light source, they were virtually impervious to tampering and would open only to the owner’s print. Vayne pulled the control from the captain’s hand, entered his own print to replace that of Ristos’, then crushed the control beneath his boot.

As desperate as the Shadalla were, their scientists had confirmed the compatibility of Earth females to breed and bear their children, and some of his species’ males had actually found their chosen. Gone was Vayne’s need to merely pick a female out of the women on this ship, using careful parameters to ensure she was suited for his position, able to bear his children, and of a nature and appearance to stimulate his desires in order to put those offspring in her belly. Royal concubines weren’t unheard of, after all, and the odds of him finding a chosen were slight. But he couldn’t look any further, impossibly drawn to this imperious warrior at his feet. And should he ever be fortunate enough to find an actual chosen mate, this lovely woman would retain concubine status, regardless.

Bring the men out. Offer. I’ll send my exec to scrutinize the females.” He wasn’t that overwhelmed to forget he had a duty to other men in his service.

He reached down and fit a hand under the elbow of the female, and his world turned upside down. The physical attraction had been immediate, granted. But the instant he touched her and her scent enveloped him, his brain exploded with a revelation he’d only experienced once in his life—and a very subdued and pale version at that. One manipulated by science. Vayne didn’t need another minute with her to understand the symptoms and wished to shout his joy out loud. She was a chosen and not his future concubine. She came up with the lightness of gossamer, and only his quick reflexes saved him from a knee to the groin as he turned to catch the blow on his thigh. Little spitfire.

A drug investigation brings Dwayne on the front step of Brooke’s life. With his attention distracted, Hailey is kidnapped and engulfed in a human trafficking ring. Dwayne marches in and toes the line between the right side of the law, and in it, pursues his heart’s desire.

Book trailer: http://ow.ly/OsYtO

Worried about Hailey, exhausted to the bone, and slightly swaying, Brooke clung to Dwayne, took strength from this solid, very real protector. She would have to be dead not to notice his firm body beneath her fingertips, the hardness of his chest pressed to her breasts, and the wicked, clean scent drifting from his skin. While they were no longer hugging, but more her clinging to him, she didn’t want to turn away, couldn’t find the power to do so. How easy would it have been to end up with this man? She’d caught the looks he had given her before. But that had all been in the past, a separate life for them both.

She had become a mother, someone who dedicated her entire being to making sure her daughter was well-rounded, cared for, and knowingly loved. Not only that, but she wasn’t a young pup any longer, and from the few women she’d seen Dwayne with, his type seemed to have a list of traits all very similar: young, perky breasts, tight asses, single, and free of major responsibilities.

His hand tightened on her back and she held her breath, waiting to see if he would push her away.

Just a few more minutes, please.

She needed him, this close contact with another being. It had been so damn long.

Hailey refused to slow down to cuddle on the couch as she had once done as a young girl. Her daughter had her own life now, one currently held in peril, but Brooke had faith they would find her. They had to. Failure wasn’t an option.

Dwayne trailed his hand up her back and pressed a palm to her head, his other arm tightening around her waist. She went with the direction, pressed her face into his warm neck, and breathed. His skin emitted heat rivaling the summer’s sun. She grasped the back of his suit jacket, wishing she could be closer. He shifted their bodies, and her aggravation spun to something else. His lips brushed her temple, and moist air fanned across the side of her face. He hovered there. So close, all she had to do was turn her face and take his mouth. She knew he would let her, too.

So near to him, starved for human contact, she wanted to get lost for a while. She trailed her nose along his neck, took another deep breath, and pressed closer.

He grumbled something unintelligible, the sound coming from his chest more than his mouth. His hand at her waist laid flat on the small of her back and urged her closer still.

The situation was moving fast out of control. Tendrils unraveled, but she was helpless to stop it. This strong male held her as if she were a treasure. He had the power and ability to make her forget everything, to make all the stresses and danger go away.

His hand slipped beneath the back of her shirt and made direct contact with her skin. They both hissed and his breath pushed her hair from her face. His cruel yet sensual mouth continued to drift in a teasing caress across her temple. She turned her head, like molasses on a cold day, up and toward him. Her lips tingled in anticipation, waiting for his kiss. She brushed her mouth across the line of his jaw, a hairsbreadth from his skin.

His heart thudded against hers, a matching hammer between their bodies, telling her he was just as affected. The hand at the back of her head tightened. She trailed the caress over his cheek; his lips were right there, centimeters away.

The rest of their surroundings faded. She didn’t know if it was because of this man drawing her absolute attention, or because of her exhaustion.

She touched the side of her mouth to his and thought she’d be prepared for the rush of desire.

She was so wrong.

#NewRelease Spotlight: GUILTY PLEASURE, by Justus Roux @justus_roux

Guilty Pleasure Banner Large
Guilty Pleasure Cover

Nicole frees herself of an abusive relationship and makes a fresh start in Chicago. Her new roommate Monica makes her feel at home right away, and Nicole is excited about starting her career as a paralegal. She meets the handsome defense lawyer Michael Lyons, whom she will be working with. Their attraction is immediate and intense, and she finds herself falling in love with her new boss.

Just as it seems Nicole’s life is finally going right, a series of brutal murders plague the Chicago area. As the number of these murders escalates all the evidence begins to point to Nicole’s new friend Adam Matthews or her lover Michael Lyons. She refuses to believe that either could possibly be capable of committing these brutal murders. Yet, by closing her eyes to this possibility, Nicole could be making a deadly mistake.

Nicole gripped the steering wheel a little tighter when she saw the lights of the illuminated Chicago skyline against the dark sky. A metaphor for her life. It had taken five years to free herself from Nathan. This move was her new beginning, her hope that things were going to get better.

She heard the soft male voice of her GPS guiding her to her new apartment. She rented this apartment sight unseen. Hell, she didn’t even know too much about her roommate. All she really knew was Monica was close to her age and needed someone to split the rent. Yet, the rent was reasonable and she could afford it on her new salary so she jumped at it.

Nicole tightened her grip a little more. Her nerves were kicking in. She accepted the job offer from the Lyons and Smith Criminal Law LLP. This would be her first fulltime job as a paralegal. She chose the criminal field because this area of the law fascinated her, and if she was going to be stuck doing a ton of research for the lawyers of the firm she might as well enjoy it.

As the generic male voice of the GPS counted the yards she had left before she reached her destination her nerves grew worse. What if she made a huge mistake choosing Chicago to start over? What if she picked the wrong Law firm to work? What if her boss was a major asshole?  What if her roommate was hard to live with? She shook the doubt out of her mind. This was the right thing to do. She had to put distance between her and Columbus Ohio and Nathan.

She pulled into the parking garage of the apartment building. She found the space Monica had said was for their apartment. She parked next to the bright blue Smart car. She couldn’t help but to smile. This little car had to be Monica’s. The interior had flowered car seat covers and a steering wheel cover that matched. Several little trinkets hung off the rearview mirror. The car was just cheerful, God she hoped that Monica was too.

She grabbed her two suitcases out of the trunk of her car. She hit the button on her key and heard the weak horn of her car letting her know her doors were locked. She looked over at the two large suitcases sitting there next to her grey Honda Civic. This was all she had left in the world, Nathan took everything else. She pulled the handles up of the two suitcases and started wheeling them to the elevator. It was awkward but she managed to get inside the elevator. She hit the button for floor twelve. She took a deep breath and slowly blew out as the doors to the elevator closed.

Thankfully it didn’t take long to get to the twelfth floor. She got off the elevator and headed to her left. She looked at the door numbers as she passed. She stopped in front of the door with the large brass number five hanging in the upper middle of the door. She let the handles of her suitcases go and dug in her purse for the key Monica sent her. She didn’t know if she could have just given a complete stranger her apartment key if the roles were reverse, but she didn’t have time to ponder this right now. Before she could find her keys the door flung open.

“Oh my God, you are so freaking cute.” The petite woman with short auburn hair said as she flung her arms around Nicole and gave her a big hug. “It is so nice to finally meet you, oh I’m Monica by the way. I’m sure you pretty much figured that out. Come on get inside and I will give you the grand tour.”

Nicole smiled as Monica grabbed one of her suitcases and excitedly went inside the apartment. Nicole grabbed the other and followed her. She couldn’t focus on what Monica was saying. She was looking around the small apartment that was going to be home for her now.

“I know it isn’t anything fancy, but I love it. The building is secure. We have a space to park our cars, but to tell you the truth I usually take the bus or the train. It’s just easier than trying to find a parking space. Plus, I tend to let my car insurance lap from time to time.  This is your room.” Monica opened the door and walked inside the small bedroom. “If you don’t like the furniture you can always get something different. My last roommate left this stuff here.”

“This is perfect, thank you.” Nicole sat on the bed.

Monica plunk down beside her on the bed. “Let me tell you a bit about myself. I’m trying to become the world’s most brilliant pastry chef, but until that happens I’m working at the bakery down the street while I take culinary classes. I don’t have a boyfriend at the moment, not really looking for one. I would love if you and I could become friends, but if you just want to keep it at roomies then I will respect that. Let’s see what else…I have a shoe fetish, which is why my car insurance sometimes lapses. But don’t worry, I always have my share of the rent on time. Tell me about you.”

“Well, there isn’t really much to tell. I just graduated from the University of Ohio. I got an amazing job offer here to be a paralegal to a pretty successful law firm, so here I am.”

“You didn’t want to work for some lawyer in Columbus? Don’t you have family there?”

“My mother lives in Toledo and she is my only family member left. There is nothing in Columbus…”

“Don’t say anymore.  I think I get it. You wanted a fresh start. I won’t pry any more. I have always lived here in Chicago. I love this town. So you picked a great city to start over. I will leave you alone to get settled. I would love to take you to my favorite bar tonight if you are up for it. You know, show you around a little.”

“I would like that.”

“Great.” Monica got up and left the room.

Nicole unpacked her clothes, set her laptop, iPod and Kindle up on top of the dresser. She was happy that she had her own bathroom. It was small, but it was all hers. She placed her beauty products in the medicine cabinet and her hairdryer and flatiron in the cabinet below the sink. She looked at her reflection in the mirror.

“You should be lucky I think you are cute, my friends think I could do much better. You should really think about joining a gym. It couldn’t hurt.”  Nathan’s hurtful words filled her mind. How did she ever think she was in love with such a horrible man? He made her feel so worthless. Her mother made her feel the same way. Perhaps that was how he found her. She was used to being treated like crap so him showing even an ounce of kindness when they first met was what reeled her in. She quickly looked away from the mirror. Damn that man, even with three hundred and fifty miles between them the mental pain he inflicted was still so keenly felt.

She heard a soft knock on her bedroom door. She walked over and opened it.

“Come on, let’s head out. I’m starving and the Tears and Beers Bar has excellent burgers.”

“Tears and Beers.”

“Cute isn’t it. It’s dark, yet the ambiance is quite charming. Plus the live bands they have there are really good.”

“Do I look okay?”

“You are as cute as a button. You are dressed perfectly.”

Nicole just smiled and let Monica lead the way.

The bar wasn’t that far from their apartment building, so they just walked. Nicole enjoyed the hustle and bustle of everything. They went inside the bar and Monica was right it was quite dark inside. The hum of the voices, clink of the dishes, and the steady sound of laughter filled the air. She looked at the band setting up.

“Oh goody, Life Rusts are playing tonight. They are really good,” Monica said as she led Nicole to a small table off to the side. They both sat down. Nicole let Monica order for her.

“So, you mentioned you are going to work for Lyons and Smith Criminal Law firm, which one are you working for?” Monica asked.

“Mr. Lyons.”

“Have you seen him yet?”

“No. Why?”

“I was just curious. Adam, the lead singer of Life Rusts…” she gestured to the very attractive man with wavy dark hair, gorgeous body and stunning blue eyes. “…well I was talking to him one day a year or so ago and it seems your new employers are big in supporting the arts. Mr. Lyons in particular. Thanks to him Adam can focus on his music instead of scrambling to come up with rent money every month.”

“He told you this.”

“Adam is an open book and such a sweetheart. Girl, look at him, damn…I would love to fuck that guy. But, he is too cool to talk to and once you start fucking a guy things get weird.”

“They just pay his rent for him?”

“Yep, pretty cool huh.”

“Why just him?”

“He is lucky. You shouldn’t never look a gift horse in the mouth. That is what Adam told me.” Monica smiled and waved at Adam. He smiled and waved back. “Do you want me to introduce you to him?”

“Oh no, I’m not interested in pursuing any kind of relationship with anyone for quite some time,” Nicole said with more passion than she intended.

“Wow, someone burnt you. I won’t pry, but if you want to talk about it I’m a hell of a good listener.”

Nicole had to admit the burgers were pretty tasty. She enjoyed Monica prattling on and soaked everything up. Monica seemed to know everything about this corner of Chicago. Life Rusts began to play. Their music was a cross between rock and blues. Adam’s voice was silky and he had all the females transfixed.

Adam came over to the table when he finished his set.

“How are you doing, Monica?” Adam said as he sat down and gestured for the bartender to bring him a beer. “Who is this cutie?” he smiled a most charming smile.

Nicole smiled shyly back.

“This is my new roomie Nicole. She will be working for Mr. Lyons. I know you know who that is.”

“He is a cool guy. You will love working for him, Nicole. He comes here from time to time to listen to my band. What he has done for me I can’t even begin to repay him. Where you from, Nicole?”

“Columbus Ohio.”

“I played a gig or two there.”

“Why don’t you come back to the apartment with us and you can help fill Nicole in on everything?” Monica asked.

“I would love to, but we are heading out when we finish our last set. I got a gig in Detroit then Cleveland, but I would love to talk with you some more when I get back, Nicole.”

Nicole just smiled.

“Later ladies,” Adam said as he grabbed his beer and headed over to his bandmates.

“See, I told you he was a sweetheart. I bet you are tired. You want to go home now?”

“Yes, I have to get some rest before I go to work tomorrow.”

Monica paid for the burgers and they headed back to the apartment.

“Thank you for being so nice,” Nicole said when they went into the apartment.

“No problem, besides this is our home. We should make it pleasant for each other.”

“I agree. I better try and get some sleep. Good night, Monica.”

“Good night, Nicole.”

Nicole went into her room. She took a shower and got ready for bed. As she set her alarm her nerves started to build. Tomorrow was her first day at work, the first big step in her career. God, she hoped she didn’t fuck it up. Thanks to her mother then Nathan, her confidence was quite low. Her grades in college were very good, she graduated near the top of her class. Yet, that ever presence nagging doubt in herself was always there.

#NewRelease Spotlight: SHAKEDOWN, by Michelle Roth

Hi there, everyone! I’m Michelle Roth and I’m here to introduce my latest release, Shakedown. Diamond and Diamond is a bit of a departure from anything that I’ve written thus far. My previous works have all been ultra-realistic contemporary romance. Shakedown still has the sexy, steamy elements just like any other erotic romance, but it also incorporates a bit of suspense and mystery as well. I certainly hope you enjoy!

Private Detective Mike Diamond is the low man on the totem pole. More often than not he finds himself investigating insurance fraud or cheating spouses. When he’s assigned a dog-napping case, he is on the brink of refusing until he meets the client. One look at her changes everything.

When the police refuse to investigate her case, Cassidy Werner turns to Diamond and Diamond Private Investigators. Despite the bad first impression he’s given her, Cassidy still hires Mike to help her find her prize Tibetan Mastiff. As she gets to know him, she realizes that he’s not only dedicated to getting Roddy back for her, but also a pretty great guy.

Right after she receives a ransom demand, things begin to heat up between them. Will Mike be able to crack the case and save her dog? And if he can, does that mean that he gets the girl too?

He was relieved to find the lobby was empty, so he stopped back at Lara’s desk and asked, “Can you believe that shit? A dog napping?”

He didn’t think for a minute she hadn’t overheard every word. That woman was like the KGB and Secret Service all in one. Anything happened in this office, she had it under immediate surveillance.

Lara cuffed him on the arm and said, “She’s in the bathroom, idiot.”

Mike winced, feeling bad he’d probably been overheard. But, seriously, who hired a PI to find a lost dog?

Seconds later, the bathroom door slowly opened. He almost did a double take as the woman stepped out. Aside from red eyes that had clearly been crying, she was a looker.

She was elegantly dressed and somewhere near his age, with a riot of auburn curls trailing down her back, like some sort of mermaid siren. All ripe, lush curves. He’d always liked his women soft.

And, he was ogling this obviously distraught woman like she was a steak. Not that he wouldn’t be more than interested in taking a bite, but it was clear that now wasn’t the time. So instead of voicing his thoughts, he stuck his hand out and said, “Mike Diamond. And you are?”

Cassidy Werner,” she said, not bothering to stick her hand out.

Well, apparently she’d heard him. He’d need to apologize, if the look on her face was any indication. He dropped his hand and said, “My office is this way.”

She gave him a look that screamed ‘You’re on thin ice, buddy’ but moved toward the open office door that Mike had gestured to. He followed her, once again appreciating the hourglass waist and full hips. Damn.

He moved behind his desk and gestured to one of the worn chairs. When she had settled in, he asked, “So I understand your dog has been kidnapped?”

About Michelle Roth:

Michelle Roth is a novelist from the Great White North (Toronto, ON). When she’s not disappearing into foreign lands, or making two perfect strangers that she invented fall in love, she’s probably curled up somewhere with a glass of wine and a good book.

In her spare time she is typically hanging out with her awesome boyfriend and their two equally awesome cats. She likes taking road trips to nowhere in particular, cooking elaborate meals then making other people do the dishes, and being nerdy on the internet. Her books are currently available on Amazon, Nook, Kobo, and any other place that sells absolutely filthy romance novels.

#NewRelease Spotlight: BAD LARRY AND THE DIVORCE, by M. Levesque

BadLarryandtheDivorcee-seal added

Riya’s divorce gift to herself is to rescue a dog. Riya and Bad Larry meet and instantly bond over their mutual hatred of men. She promises Bad Larry that she will never let anyone hurt him again if he promises not to let her bring home any men in a moment of hormonal weakness. The plan works perfectly…almost too perfectly, as she’s met a sexy detective that is 2/3 of the way to being a superhero. Lucky for Riya, Jaden isn’t giving up, despite her warnings of owning a man hating dog. Jaden’s got his work cut out for him. He not only has to impress the divorcee but her twelve pound bodyguard as well.

Chapter One

Mexican Hair Remover

This was my first official outing since the divorce. A former classmate died the week before and my class of seventy-four was holding a memorial service in our local Knights of Columbus hall.

I normally didn’t go to these things, since high school hadn’t exactly been the time of my life. I’d known very little about the guy who died, beyond one date at the movies that ended abruptly when I’d assaulted him with candy but I was sick of hiding in my run down crappy apartment just thinking about my ex-husband and his shiny new girlfriend.

To be quite honest I’m not great with death in general but I’m not really great with life either. So, unlike the majority of people going up to speak a few words about their memories of a guy very few of them really knew, I sat quietly in the back, next to my best friend from high school. I thought about the time the deceased and I went out for a movie and he behaved himself after nearly being concussed by a king sized Charleston chew. This apparently classified him as being nice, so I thought nice thoughts about David Bogs, the nice guy that I went on a date with, that one time.

I was currently sporting my favorite little black dress, which only fit again because when one gets a divorce you not only lose your dream house, half your stuff, your pride, your faith in the opposite sex and all of your couple friends, but you also lose a few pounds in the process of having your heart ripped out and set on fire.

To complete my post-divorce ensemble I was also wearing some sexy little four inch vixen pumps and my last pair of clean underwear…which weren’t really underwear as much as they were bikini bottoms. My new apartment, on the wrong side of town, didn’t have laundry, so between my work schedule and the fact that I hated the Laundry Nazi that ran the only laundromat in town…it was bikini bottoms or commando.

At least I wasn’t here alone. Pam sat beside me wiping tears from her glittering blue eyes with the corner of a designer silk scarf. I glanced over at her, dabbing daintily as not to mess her perfect makeup and was nearly blinded by the glittering stone on her ring finger. I tried not to glare at her but as the laser etched four-carat princess cut stone caught the low light of the room again it made me wonder if carrying that thing around all day would cause long term damage to her spine.

In grade school Pam and I had been equals. We’d been inseparable since kindergarten and nobody ever questioned why we were best friends until puberty hit and Pam turned into a supermodel overnight. As to whether or not this had anything to do with her perfect marriage to a rich scientist or not, that was left to be seen but they’d met in college and seemed to lead an almost magical existence together as beauty and the geek.

I squelched my jealousy. Pam was a great person, probably a better person than I was and she deserved to be happy with her husband who invented microwave bacon. She deserved to be happy living in a Malibu mansion complete with its own elevator and faux British butler.

I felt myself hunch down in my seat as the weight of my envy started to crush my inner awesomeness into a sticky paste of self-loathing.

I noticed this and straightened my spine in defiance of my own self-doubt. I was happy. Well, at least I was happier than I had been when I was married to that glorified ambulance chaser.

My life was great now… Okay, life wasn’t great but it was better than the poor guy we were remembering here today. I wasn’t even sure how he’d died and a morbid part of my brain was very curious as to how a thirty-year-old guy suddenly drops dead. This of course led to thoughts of my own mortality and the very real fact that life wasn’t forever and thus far, I’d done nothing with mine. Top off this fun fact with the current (possible medical emergency) going on between my thighs and my okay life was taking a nosedive into crappy fast enough to break the sound barrier. I needed very badly to go to the bathroom but doing so at this point in time would seem rude, and the tears streaming down my face were not for the deceased.

Sadly, I was having said emergency because of cheap Mexican hair removal products that I bought on eBay. More specifically, it may have been used on a location on my body not suggested by the manufacturer. That little red warning label wasn’t just there for decoration after all.

The twentieth girl David Bogs dated in high school was standing up to take the stage and I was starting to think nice guy was a bit of a player but more importantly, I was pretty sure my vagina was about to spontaneously combust.

The thought had me squirming in my seat. “I have to go to the bathroom!” I hissed in a panicked tone, grabbing Pam’s hand and nearly slicing my hand open on her wedding ring.

She met my urgent gaze and nodded once. “Okay…do you want me to go with you?”

I thought that was unspoken girl code anyway but instead of answering her I shot to my feet and dragged her to hers.

Everyone stopped and turned around to face us with expectant expressions on their tear-streaked faces.

I stood frozen, looking at all those faces from my past. A past I’d rather forget if given the choice.

Pam snapped to attention and flicked her wrist at them, like a monarch. “Continue.”

We burst into the handicap bathroom, which I noticed in passing was just as dreary as one would expect at a place like this and I immediately lifted my skirt and started scratching at the affected area. My eyes rolled back in my head and I blew out a sigh of relief as the itching/burning slowly dulled.

“Are you okay?” Pam’s eyes widened with concern.

“I don’t know. I need you to look.” I kicked off my heels and shimmied out of my bikini bottoms.

“Look at what?” Her eyes widened further.

“My crotch!” I hissed at her. “I think I might have chemical burn. Just tell me how bad it is.” I hopped up onto the counter between the sinks. If it’s really bad I’ll go to the hospital.

She rushed to the door and twisted the lock. “I’m not drunk enough for this, Rye.”

“It’s two o’clock in the afternoon. Why are you even drunk at all?” I lifted my feet onto the counter. “You don’t have a drinking problem do you?”

She snorted. “I hate these things. I’m only here because of you. Plus, I’m too rich to have a drinking problem.”

She had a point and who was I to judge? I was the one sitting on a bathroom sink with my legs open.

You’re sure this isn’t a side effect of being married to your ex?” She asked, trying to seem casual about the fact that he’d basically put his dick on layaway at Walmart for the last five years of our marriage and I might have some sort of antibiotic resistant strain of Chlamydia.

Thankfully I knew that wasn’t the case. I’d been tested as soon as I found out and I’d luckily come back with a clean bill of health. On the not so bright side of the things, STD free or not, I’d essentially dumped battery acid on my coochie. “It was hair remover product.” I admitted timidly. I could no longer afford bi monthly trips to the best salons in town, just to have a complete stranger pour hot wax on my downstairs and rip the hair out by the roots.

She winced and lifted the edge of my skirt just in time for a man to walk into the room, through the supposedly locked bathroom door. We both froze as tall dark and handsome took in what he was seeing. Pam dropped the edge of my skirt and took a step back as I clambered off the counter.

I thought you locked the door?” I asked her.

I did,” she whispered back.

My face flamed dark red. “That wasn’t what it looked like. I’m kind of having a medical emergency.”

He slowly gave me a sympathetic smile. “I’m an EMT and a cop. I could call an ambulance?” He pulled out his badge, then his cellphone.

I narrowed my eyes at him. Of course I would run into Super Cop. I was starting to think I was the only one from my graduating class that hadn’t done anything worthwhile with my life. This guy had become Superman and I’d dropped out of college early, to marry a lawyer. Fat load of good that did me. Now, I was a secretary for a lawn mowing and pool cleaning company because I gave the workers something pretty to look at in the office and I was having my best friend give me armature medical advice because my co-pay was more than I made in three months. “Are you really an EMT?”

He smirked. “Part time, yes I am. Did you use a different soap or laundry detergent? You’re probably having an allergic reaction. I can take a quick look at it if you’d like.” Now it was his turn to blush.

“It was cheap Mexican hair remover cream, actually.” I mumbled then glanced at Pam. I wasn’t sure what the protocol was on this sort of thing. She shrugged, leaving it completely up to me as to whether or not I was going to allow a strange man to look up my skirt in the name of free medical advice. On the plus side, he didn’t mention STDs.

After a moment of thought I nodded.

Do you mind watching the door?” he asked Pam who nodded like a bobbing head doll. Then he stepped forward, put his hands on my waist and lifted me back onto the counter, like a champ. I lifted my knees slowly as he got down onto one of his.

I snapped my legs together suddenly. “Um, my name is Riya,” I blurted out.

He glanced up at me and offered me his hand over my knees. “I’m sorry, how rude of me. I’m Jaden.”

Then he looked down and pried my knees apart gently before lifting my skirt. “Oh my god.” He glanced up at me, his face a little ashen.

“Am I going to die?” I whispered.

Pam’s eyes widened as she glanced at me.

He looked back down between my legs. “It’s pretty red and there appears to be some blistering.” He blew on the skin and my head thunked back into the mirror behind me. “Does that feel better?”

Sadly it felt better than anything I’d been able to do to myself in that last year and from the knowing smirk on Pam’s face she knew it too.

He lowered my skirt back down and I sat up. “I suggest you use a paste of baking soda and water to…prevent further damage to the affected area.”

He swooped down and picked up my neon yellow bikini bottoms off the floor and dangled them in front of me with one finger. “Laundry day?”

I hopped off the counter and snatched the underwear from his hand. “You know,” I said by way of changing the subject, “I don’t remember you from high school.” And he was hot enough to remember.

He seemed confused for a moment before nodding in sudden understanding. “You wouldn’t, I’m a detective for the case.”

“What case?” Pam and I asked simultaneously.

He held up a finger. “Your class stud. He was murdered.”

“Huh.” I pulled on my bikini bottoms and shimmied everything back into place. Jaden was watching me with amused interest. This was the look I got from most men. They always seemed interested but really weren’t sure what to do with me once they got me. I was funny from a distance but up close…I think I was just confusing. This little incident with the Mexican hair removal products was just the latest in a long line of embarrassing mishaps that controlled my life.

As if reading my thoughts he cleared his throat. “Does this sort of thing happen to you often?”

“It’s not my fault.” I explained. “My ancestor’s milk cow kicked over a lantern and burned down half of Chicago. It’s the family curse.” Pam and I nodded at him in unison.

He pinched his lips together and cleared his throat again. “I don’t know if you’re joking or not but I meant, do you ignore warning labels?”

I shrugged and pulled on my shoes with one hand on his very solid shoulder.

Pam’s eyes sparkled mischievously and she looked down at her phone. “I have to go.”

I gave her the same look Jesus gave Judas at suppertime but she smiled brightly and wondered out the door. “I’m staying at the Inn, call me later.” She yelled.

I slapped myself in the forehead. “I forgot my purse.” I was not going back in there. I hated those people and my support system had failed me as soon as she saw a potential candidate to fill the role of rebound boyfriend. I kept telling her I wasn’t interested in another man but she ignored me. She thought my lack of interest in the opposite sex had more to do with the fact that my only ever lover had been able to bring me to climax one time during our relationship.

Jaden raised his eyebrows at me. “Would you like me to help you out?”

For the briefest of moments I worried that he’d read my mind again, until I realized he was talking about the purse. I crossed my arms and assessed him carefully. “What’s in it for you?”

I’ll get your purse but only if you give me your number afterwards.”

“I can’t.”

His charming smile withered into a slight grimace.

I immediately wanted to assure the ego bruised Adonis that my lack of interest had nothing to do with the fact that I wasn’t chomping at the bit to play doctor again. “No, it’s nothing like that. You’re very attractive but I’ve given up men.” I flashed him my tan line from where I’d worn a wedding ring for the last ten years.

Without missing a beat, he quirked an eyebrow at me, “We’re not all the same you know.”

I snorted. “Yeah but I’m allergic to green Skittles and I’m colorblind where Skittles are concerned…so rather than risk death, I’m not eating Skittles anymore.” The unspoken part was that I was really starting to crave Skittles. Funerals always made me crave Skittles. Don’t judge me.

He was obviously confused but unwilling to throw in the towel just yet. “I know that means something to you, but maybe you should explain it to me…slowly.”

“It means I’m colorblind when it comes to men and I always pick the green ones.”

“I’m not sure but that sounds a little racist,” he said.

“Okay, not colorblind, just asshole blind. Now, will you get my purse or not?”

He peered at me through narrowed eyes. “I’ll get your purse but just so you know, we’re still going out, at least once. I like you.”

“I can’t, I’m already in a relationship.” I said, desperately. I could feel my resolution dissolving very quickly under his blue-eyed stare.

“Are you in a relationship with a woman because you just told me you’ve given up on men?”

I chewed my bottom lip and his eyes darted down to my mouth. Just the fact that he noticed my mouth turned me on. What was wrong with me? “No, not with a woman. It’s actually more of a really jealous roommate situation, than an actual relationship.”

Cats and goldfish don’t count,” he said, cueing in on my vagueness.

“Ha, joke’s on you, he’s a Doberman named Bad Larry and Larry likes men less than I do.” Bad Larry is actually a twelve-pound Miniature Pinscher but he really doesn’t like men and he doesn’t really know he’s only twelve pounds and he has a rap sheet to prove it.

I got Larry when the divorce was finalized. My ex didn’t like dogs so in an act of admittedly impulsive rebellion, I got Larry. Larry was a rescue from an animal shelter and when I saw him for the first time and discovered that he didn’t like men either, we became best friends. I promised to never let anyone hurt him again and he promised to make sure that in a moment of hormonal weakness, I didn’t let any men come back to my apartment.

I’d witnessed Larry in action twice. Once when the vet was checking him over before I brought him home and once when I was taking him out to pee and a construction worker tried to pet him. Larry is now on a city mandated bad dog list, meaning that he has to behave himself from now on or he could be taken away and put in puppy lifer prison.

Jaden shook his head at me and returned a moment later with my purse in one hand and his phone in the other. “I have to go right now but I put my card in your purse just in case you change your mind about Skittles.”

I winked at him. “You got it stud, but right now I have an emergency date with the box of baking soda currently deodorizing my fridge.”

He smiled broadly at me. “Tell Bad Larry I said hello.”

“Bad Larry doesn’t need to know about you. Trust me, it’s for your own protection.”
